Our game's going viral! Shroom and Gloom Dev Log - Apr 2025
Hey Shroomers!
Ben Beam here with your monthly fix of news from the team behind the first-person double-deckbuilder, Shroom and Gloom!
It's been an exciting time on this side, with Team Lazerbeam landing some big development wins, and our game going viral beyond anything we've experienced before. Let's dive in!
The shrooms are growing!
We're happy to report that development on our dream game has been going great. We're currently approaching this beast from two fronts:
- The programming beams are mid-way ;through an epic refactor of the game's code-base, improving our tools for building future content, and landing major win with how the game feels and performs.
- Art and game design beams have continued building out new levels and new cards, making some great progress in expanding the game beyond the prototype.
While it's been a delight to see the game steadily growing more awesome, the best part of this process has been how much fun we're having working on this game together.
If you need some proof, look no further than our recent "1 month of game dev in 1 minute" montage!
The spores are spreading!
This month we dropped a short video on our Instagram, and it blew up beyond anything we could have wished for!
The video was just a simple reply to a community question about what players see when looking down in our game. The same post performed super well over on our TikTok page, generating 200K+ views, so we figured we'd stick in on Instagram too. What happened next, totally blew our minds.
The Instagram post blew up beyond anything we'd experienced before, racking up over 1 million views in a matter of days. We were overwhelmed by supportive comments and messages, and thousands of new players grabbed the prototype on itch. We saw Shroom and Gloom catapulted to the top of itch's roguelike and card game categories on, and our little Discord blew up too.
With the viral video set to tick past 2M views any minute, we're completely blown away by the overwhelming support. Mega thanks and high fives to all the new folks that have discovered us through this expose, and extra high fives to everyone that's been supporting us for years. It's such a surreal moment for us, and we're so grateful to have gotten this kind of exposure!
It's our Shroomaversary!
April marked a major milestone for us!
We celebrated the 1 year anniversary of going into pre-production on Shroom and Gloom! This time last year we were wrapping up the art test that was designed to assess if the we could elevate the visuals of Shroom and Gloom (then, still a charming, but janking jam game).
It's a lovely moment, reflecting back on 365 days of working together to bring this dream to life!
Gotta run!
Okay, we gotta dash! There are some exceptionally exciting developments in the works! Can't say anything just yet, but by the time of our next monthly dev log we should be able to spill all the beans!
Our eternal thanks and high fives to you for being a part of our quest to make the best-looking, most-fun deckbuilder ever!
Stay rad everybody!

It's so awesome seeing the continued improvement to your game! I loved playing this and I'm so excited to see where your game progresses! There's so much love put into this already!!!
A very promising game, great atmosphere.
What does 'evolve' mean on cards?
Thanks! Cool to hear!
Card with "Evolve" will evolve into a new cards after they've been played enough times that their evolve counter ticks down to 0.
will you be needing voice actors?
Nope, we've not got any voice acting in the game.
Anyone curious about any specific aspects of development on this game? We're gonna try keep putting out this monthly dev logs, so let us know if you wanna see us dig into anything in particular!
Yeah! So I know you said you would have some news about the new levels coming out but I would also like to hear how you guys get your ideas and the processes you guys go through, could be interesting (at least for me XD)
What a cool question! We'd love to share some more info on this!
